By Dave Detling 12/30/07 — Political pressure is
mounting in Iowa. There are only four days until Iowans voice
their vote in the state caucus.  So the candidates are clarifying
their positions and doing some rumor control.

The latest war of words is between two rival Republicans, Arkansas
Governor Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
Romney has been running ads denouncing Huckbee’s stance on taxes
and immigration. And the remarks are taking a negative toll.

WE’VE DEFENDED THE ATTACKS MADE ON ME BY GOVERNOR
ROMNEY.  THESE ATTACKS HAVE BEEN NOT ONLY DESPERATE BUT DISHONEST
AND WE FEEL LIKE IT’S TIME TO RESPOND.

But today’s comments may
have come too late. Several polls suggest
Huckabee’s popularity may have STALLED. SO NOW, Huckabee is
on the defensive.  He has turned the tables on Romney, calling
him a dishonest politician.

THE TRUTH DOESN’T HURT ME BUT THE
INACCURACIES AND THE ABSOLUTE DISTORTIONS AND THE DISHONEST ATTACKS HE
HAS PUT FORTH HAS NOT BEEN VERY HELPFUL AND I THINK IT’S NOT HELPFUL
TO THE PEOPLE OF IOWA.//IT’S NOT JUST ME BUT THE VOTERS ARE BEING
CHEATED SO I’VE GOT A RESPONSIBILITY TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT.

Despite all this, Huckabee
says Romney’s comments are just part of the election
process.

THIS ISN’T MY FIRST ELECTION AND IT ISN’T THE ROUGHEST
ONE I’VE BEEN IN YET.  I’VE BEEN IN SOME TAUGHT ONES IN
ARKANSAS.  IT’S A ROUGH POLITICAL CLIMATE DOWN THERE.  IT’S
A SAUSAGE GRINDER WHEN YOU’RE A REPUBLICAN.  THIS IS THE WAY IT
WORKS.

And he’ll continue working
the campaign trail as he attempts to convince Iowans that he derserves
their vote.

IT’S PRETTY REMARKABLE TO BE WHERE WE
ARE WITH THAT KIND OF DISADVANTAGE WE’VE HAD IN FUNDING,
STAFFING.  WE’RE THRILLED WITH THE FACT WE’VE GOTTEN WHERE WE ARE
BUT WE WANT TO STAY THERE…WE WANT TO KEEP GOING AND MOVING FORWARD.
