Big results don’t always require big money. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum narrowly missed a victory at the Iowa caucus by a mere eight votes. The underdog had a last minute surge to bring him neck and neck with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Despite the close results, there was a huge discrepancy in campaign spending between the two camps.

Santorum waged a low budget, grassroots campaign. He spent about $30,000 on ads in the Hawkeye State and his trusty Dodge Ram pick-up truck dubbed “the Chuck truck” became a fixture on the campaign trail. It was a symbol of Santorum’s casual, regular guy appeal.

On the other hand, Romney spent about $1.5 billion on ads in Iowa. There was no pick-up truck for the Harvard grad. Instead, he toured the state in a large campaign bus. Romney’s spending boils down to about $49 per vote while Santorum spent just 73 cents per vote.
