COVID-19: CMs of States performing well are getting less credit

Let us first look at the incidence per million of cases by State (https://www.covid19india.org/ plus Census 2011 Data). However, to make it fair, we compare states which are close to each other on per capita

Using Google Trends, we attempted to figure who received the biggest bounce (A surrogate of popularity) due to the COVID-19 crisis. We looked at two points, end of Feb and 1st week of April. Because we used Google Trends for each leader separately, please use the information with the following caveats

A higher rank does not mean one leader is better than the other, it only means that they got a bigger bounce from where they were.

Let us now look at a few Case studies

Uttar Pradesh had 278 cases as of yesterday evening (Covidindia.Org). If one looks at other States in the same per capita GDP grouping – Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand and then correct this data for population. UP’s COVID-19 Incidence performance rank within this group would be 1. Jharkhand, 2. Bihar, 3. Assam and 4. Uttar Pradesh. If one combines 4 other States with slightly higher per capita GDP and check UP’s rank, it ends 8 th out 8 States which means, the worst of these 8 states.

Let us move to Rajasthan next, Rajasthan had 266 cases as of yesterday evening (Covidindia.Org). If one looks at other States in the same per capita GDP grouping – Andhra, Punjab, Maharashtra and then correct this data for population. Rajasthan’s COVID-19 Incidence performance rank within this group would be 1. Punjab, 2. Rajasthan, 3. Andhra and 4. Maharashtra. If one combines 4 other States with slightly higher per capita GDP and check Rajasthan’s rank, it ends 4th out 8 States. Overall, an ordinary performance

Karnataka had 151 cases as of yesterday evening (Covidindia.Org). If one looks at other States in the same per capita GDP grouping – Delhi, Haryana, Telangana and then correct this data for population. Karnataka’s COVID-19 Incidence performance rank within this group would be 1. Karnataka, 2. Haryana, 3. Telangana and 4. Delhi. If one combines 4 other States with slightly lower per capita GDP and check Karnataka’s rank, it ends 2nd out 8 States which means, one of best performing of these 8 States.
