Delhi Assembly Elections: Return of CCTV Camera Politics

Delhi Assembly Elections : The National Capital Territory of Delhi is set to go for polls in the year 2020. In 2015 Assembly Election, Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party created a political earthquake in Delhi. The party born out of Anna Movement won 67 of 70 assembly seats of Delhi assembly. BJP was reduced to mere 3 assembly seats while Congress could not open its account. Arvind Kejriwal, with massive mandate went on to become the Chief Minister of Delhi. Added to it, he and his party, AAP, was looked upon as a future alternative of national politics.

Before coming to power in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal led AAP had promised to transform Delhi into one of the most developed cities of the world. Installation of 15 lakhs CCTV cameras was part of this plan. Aam Aadmi Party had promised to install 15 lakh cameras in the national capital to maintain law and order. However, four and half years down the line no step had been taken by the AAP government towards fulfilling this promise.

Impact of Lok Sabha 2019 Result

Since the massive mandate in Delhi assembly election, the Aam Aadmi Party has failed to win any of the election in national capital. The ambitious AAP was decimated in the municipal corporation election that was held in 2017, two years after the party formed its government in Delhi. In the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, Arvind Kejriwal and team faced a humiliating defeat. The party could not win even a single Lok Sabha seat in Delhi. AAP came third in all the 7 Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, that is behind Congress. Added to it, the party lost three of its four Lok Sabha seats that it had won in Punjab in 2014. The loss has caste a doubt on return of Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister of Delhi in 2020.

CCTV Politics in Delhi

The BJP MP from East Delhi, on Sunday, 23rd June took to twitter to inform that he was installing CCTV cameras in his constituency. He even took a shot at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ruling Aam Aadmi Party who had installation of 15 lakhs CCTV cameras in national capital in their poll manifesto. He said that the cameras were also going to focus on the fake promises of the AAP chief, who had once promised to install CCTV cameras in the national capital.
